Cabinet Confessional

Over at the Parent Bloggers Network, the talk is on snacks, which is appropriate since we're in the midst of the back to school season. Since my 5 month old son is way too young to have snacks, I'll tell you a little about some of the things we snack on around here, both healthy and not-so-healthy. My problem is that I am always hungry, and it's a real feeling of hunger. I know this because I've spent much of my life eating out of boredom and not hunger pangs. I attribute my hunger spike to breastfeeding, but who knows. The funny thing is that throughout my pregnancy, I had no appetite at all...not due to morning sickness, but I was just not hungry. Now, you'd think I was eating for twins. My go-to snack is almost always carbs, which sucks for my waistline. But I do try to eat fruit or veggies instead.

Always on hand:
  • chocolate chips
  • peanut butter
  • crackers
  • pretzels
  • tortilla chips/salsa
  • sunflower seeds
  • raisins (I don't know why we have these, as no one eats them. That must be why they are always on hand...they've never left the pantry!)
  • hot cocoa
Often on hand:
  • hummus
  • carrot sticks
  • yogurt (for husband, not me...not a fan)
  • ice cream
  • granola bars
Occasionally on hand:
  • chips
  • stuff I've baked (see previous post)
  • chocolate
  • frozen Key Lime pie wedges (a huge weakness for me, hence the "occassionally" category
I guess it's not so bad when I read that list. I can't imagine why I'm so fat! Oh that's right, I eat too much, even if it's too much of the right foods. Honestly, it's true that you win the battle at the grocery store. Just don't buy it! It (usually) works for me.

On a related note, when my son starts eating more solids, I can't wait to make cereal balls using the brown rice cereal I've started feeding him. I think it'll be a great snack for a toddler. You just wet the cereal enough so it sticks together (with water, milk, or pureed fruit) and roll it into a ball. Then you dip it in some more of the cereal so that it's not sticky.

This post was written for Parent Bloggers Network as an entry for a contest sponsored by Brothers-All-Naturalwho makes snacks that you won't feel guilty about sneaking from your pantry. Their all-natural fat-free potato crisps got my attention immediately. Head over to PBN and share your dirty, snacky secrets.

  1. Fat Free Potato Crisps! I need some of those!

  2. I kid you not, an entire dozen donuts have disappeared during the night at our house more times than I care to count...and heaven forbid my mom and I are in the same house, we meet each other coming and going from the kitchen, one fussing because the other ate all the good stuff......I remember her doing this back as far as I can remember...getting up middle of the night and eating everything in sight.

I'm really bad because it doesn't have to be sweet. My husband got up one morning and there was 3 cheese wrappers on the counter along with an empty sleeve of crackers...I had no recollection of even eating it but it couldn't have been anyone else.....

That's the worst kind, the stuff I eat and don't even I'm hungry just thinking about it

  3. Yummmmm...your snacks sound so tasty!

I'm always hungry too. It's a major battle everyday for me not to spend my whole day stuffing my face. Add to the mix that I'm an emotional eater who suffers from depression, and you get a recipe for disaster!

And I can't blame it on breastfeeding either, LOL!

  4. It's funny about the raisins! My mother used to insist on buying bananas though no one ate them. I do the same.

Your snacks sound much more healthy than mine, mine are usually cookies or cupcakes. To make matters worse, I have to hide them from my son as we are trying to change hi seating habits.

Hiding cupcakes makes one feel cheap.

  5. Key lime pie isn't a fruit? It has the word lime in it. Your snacks don't sound too bad. Personally, my problem is just having too much of a good thing.

  6. Hi Kathleen,
Your chocolate zucchini muffins look to-die for! Thanks so much for listing my Monday give away on your side bar. I really appreciate it!

  7. I had the same experience of not being hungry at all while pregnant and then being starving while nursing. I'm the only woman I know who LOST weight in my pregnancy and GAINED weight nursing. Oh well.

Lesser Evil are my new favorite naughty but nice snacks. Not exactly good for you, but not as bad as what I might eat instead...

  8. Choclate chip cookies and potato chips! My favorites! I do not carry either in the house, too dangerous.

I'm a good listener...comment away!
