Cartwheels in a Sari

One of my best friends, Jayanti Tamm, has her first book, a memoir, called Cartwheels in a Sari: A Memoir of Growing Up Cult, coming out in the next month.
Jayanti and I met nearly 15 years ago at a summer writers' workshop at Bennington College, and oddly enough, we've remained friends for all those years. I say oddly because it's not often that you meet someone and continue a relationship with the person over a long distance for many years. We used to have writing in common, but now we have children in common. Her daughter was born 5 months before my son, so we share our experiences of motherhood instead of talking about our favorite books. We live about 2 hours from each other, so we do visit a few times a year, and I'll definitely be seeing her in a few weeks at SoJo's first birthday party.

I can't wait to read this book, first because I know it will illuminate a lot of things about my friend's life, and two, because I'm so intrigued about her upbringing as "the chosen one" in the Sri Chinmoy center in Queens, NY. Jayanti's website can fill you in on some of the details. I'm so proud of her! She's worked so hard as a writer, and I can't be more happy for her that she's been published, by Random House of all places.

Support my best friend! I'm sure you'll enjoy this book. You can pre-order a copy from Amazon. It comes out on April 14th!
