The Moment I've Been Waiting For

I broke out the soy crayons today (thanks Shana!) and got SoJo started on his first art project. O how I've waited for this moment, ever since the day I peed on a stick in the shower and found out I was going to be a mom (yeah, I didn't trust just peeing over a toilet...TMI).
In case you didn't know, I was and still am, to a lesser degree, an art teacher and artist. To watch my son dig his hands into the bowl of crayon rocks and scratch some marks on paper fills me with such joy and satisfaction.
Now let me be clear. SoJo made some very rudimentary marks, light ones at that. He's no Picasso. Though hopefully he'll retain some of his child-like creativity as he grows up. You might know Picasso's quote, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." Anyway.
He was more interested in handling the rock crayons and throwing them on the bed of the guest room/my studio. And jumping on the bed, of course.
But he did do a bit of scribbling, and like any good art teachin' mama, I snapped photos of his intro to art.
There's my craft table, formerly our kitchen table, and the little shelf that I found on garbage day in our alley which holds some of my stuff.
That's one of my paintings above the table, actually a diptych (a two-panel painting).
Can you guess the nursery rhyme it's based on? It used to hang in SoJo's room, my former art space, but I thought it was a bit too imposing to hang in there. Blackbirds flying down and all.

That is so cool - I loved seeing a little bit of your studio. What a great painting! He looks happy to be "creating" and jumping on the bed of course lol

Okay, another weird coincidence... there's a painting in Jasper's room with a big cat and, uh, four crows swooping down. I should take a picture for you.

I love the crayon rocks! How fun. He'll jump in soon enough... buy some Magic Erasers now!

Soy crayons? I've never heard of such a thing.

I've just always used Crayola.

It is always so much fun letting the little ones do art! When I saw your craft corner, the first thing I noticed was the painting and was going to ask you who painted it, You are a great artist!

Oh Kathleen! Your guest room/studio looks great. This is the one over the garage that you've been working on? I can't believe you've gotten so much done on it! This IS the same room, right?
Let's see. He wanted it for a man room and you wanted a studio. Looks like you got both!

Yeah! I was going to give Lili her soy crayons for her birthday, but I think I'll save them for the Easter basket...she's probably not ready yet! (Ya think?)

Is the nursery rhyme the one where the king was in his counthouse counting out the money.... I LOVE your painting. You are multi-artistically talented!

I really like that close-up of his chubby little hand in the box of crayons.

One of my favorite things to do with my own kids was crafty projects. We were constantly doing some thing or another!
