The Campus Quilt Company takes your old t-shirts, sentimental fabrics, baby memorabilia and nearly any fabrics you'd like to use and turns them into high-quality quilts. I love that they take items that you might not have use for anymore and create something new out of them.
I especially like this one, which uses ties in the quilt blocks.
Their quilts come in a wide variety of sizes, from lap blankets and baby quilts to king-sized bedspreads and pillows--there's something for everyone in all budgets and sizes. These would make a great Christmas present (be sure to order by December 1st!).
Since Mr. Geek and didn't have too many old t-shirts that we could turn into a quilt, I asked The Campus Quilt Company if they could turn some of my fabric art into a quilt. Remember these pieces, from my indigo dyeing post?
Campus Quilts said "absolutely!" when I asked if they could turn this into a quilt. Let me also tell you that these fabric pieces are odd sizes. Usually Campus Quilt Co. turns your t-shirts into 12"x12" squares to be sewn together, but with my (fussy) quilt, they'd be working with 10x10" squares. It was certainly not a problem for them.
The process of having them make you a quilt couldn't be easier. They send you a package which includes a sheet of stickers for numbering your pieces, an order form where you list your specifications, a ring of sample fabrics for the quilt backing, and a return-postage mailer in which you place all of your t-shirts or fabrics.
The mailer is already paid for, and you only need to drop it off at a UPS box or store to ship back to The Campus Quilt Company.
Here are my fabrics, lined up and ready to be numbered with the stickers.
You just stick on the number in order (the directions in the package are very easy to follow)
Then stick them in the mailer and send it off.
A day or so later, my quilt was ready to be sewn. I even got a call from Sally, the sweet woman who sewed my quilt. Because this was not a typical quilt order, she wanted to check with me about cutting my fabrics and such. What great customer service!
It only took about a week for them to finish my quilt, and I was so happy with the result.
I have it laying on our guest bed for the photos, though I'm still not sure where it will hang.
It's so beautiful! They also added a sleeve on the back so I can hang this on the wall. My intention is to display it, but also to use it for teaching purposes. Often when I teach shibori dyeing workshops, I take these samples and pass them around to the students. It will be much more professional to show them this quilt!

16 Squares - Stadium T-Shirt Quilt with husbands tshirts and kids clothes- unofrms
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt! It will make a fantastic display for shibori techniques, I think, and it's the most awesome "T-Shirt" quilt I've ever seen. Sooo... my husband wants to make a T-shirt quilt, but I must say that if I won, I would make a Lap Quilt for Kidoodle. I'd batik some rockets and aliens on cotton squares and ask them to bind it in navy. Oh, I think I would love that!
ReplyDeleteWHOA! See, I've actually fantasized about cutting up all of Mat's high school shirts and making a quilt, but I'm lacking the time {not to mention motivation}. This is so incredibly cool.
ReplyDeleteI'd do the "9 Squares - Lap T-Shirt Quilt" and pick a nice denim blue {his fave color} for the backing... Yep, that'd help me to get rid of quite a few {well, 9} of his old t-shirts. And I'd be doing a JIG!!!

This is so awesome because I have been saving my daughters tshirts in hopes of making a quilt for years. I have heard about these, but have never seen a finished product or found someone who does t-shirt quilts. I don't know how many I have, but it's a lot. I visited the site, and I'd have to say that I'd spend the gift certificate on the 16 or maybe 24 square quilt!

Oh my gosh, I am so happy you posted this. Even if I don't get picked I will sure be contacting this company. My husband has been pestering me for the last two years about making a t-shirt quilt with all of his high school sport t-shirts. He has been the head athletic trainer at a local high school for seven years and has collected hundreds of t-shirts over the years. Luckily I was able to get him to get rid of the really grimey ones that he had worn too many times. I would try to use as many t-shirts as possible with the gift certificate and pay the difference to get the biggest size they make. Oh my husband would be so happy.
