Hometown Seeds Survival Seeds {Giveaway}

Gardening season is quickly approaching, and this year we're going to cut up an area of our already tiny lawn and grow more veggies. My dream is to one day live out in the country where I can have a large garden and grow enough food to live off of (a la Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle) but until that time, I'll be happy if my tomatoes don't get blight this year.

This week I'll be starting some seeds indoors, and Hometown Seeds sent me a wonderful survival seeds package, which I think is a fabulous idea. Included in the kit are 16 non-hybrid, easy-to-grow seeds like peas, corn, tomatoes, radishes and more.
The intent behind the survival seeds is that they can be used for Long Term Food Storage long-term (5 years) and used in a crisis where food shortages might occur. But I intend to use them to supplement our food supply this year, especially since our CSA went out of business this year.

Hometown Seeds has plenty of other veggie, herb and flower seeds at reasonable prices. It's nearly time here in the Northeast to plant my lettuce seeds, so you might want to place your seed order soon!
The survival seeds package is the top seller at Hometown Seeds, and they're generously offering one K&K reader
A Survival Seeds Package! ($39.99)

I love the variety in the seed pack! I never would have thought of some of those being good together but I guess they would!

I like how you can harvest the seeds for the following years crop. We garden every year, so this would save us money. The amount of seeds you now get in the packets is ridculously small.

thank you for the info. I was looking for seeds that were not hybrids. I am a very new gardener and would love if you have a moment to blog about how to get started growing your own garden. I have the yard but am not too sure about the rest.

I think this is such a cool idea! You know Bob is the gardener in our family but I think this year I will try to plant a windowbox of herbs to cook with. I didn't know thyme was so decorative, with purple flowers!

I've so been wanting to try the survival seed package since I first heard about it on the radio. I'd definitely love to try all the different tomato seeds too--especially since prices are going up, and I'm trying to eliminate canned goods from my life!

Cool concept - although like you I would most likely use some of the seeds for this year's garden too! I also like their veggie seed variety, particularly the Little Marvel Pea Seeds.

We grew tomatoes from seed this year (Mortgage Lifter variety) and only got about 5 fruits out of 7 plants that reached maturity. Our salad greens did well though. The brocolli "bolted" and went to seed.
I can't get spinach to grow here so I would be excited about the Bloomsdale Longstanding Spinach.

I love that their seeds are heirloom. That means that they can be harvested and next year you will get the exact same plant. With the price of produce going to be extremely expensive this year, I am planting all I can.

This giveaway comes at the perfect time ... I've been browsing, on-line, for seeds ... good seeds ... you've introduced me to the perfect place. :)

I love the idea of survival seeds. I got a ton of seeds last year and haven't been able to get my garden going yet. So I'm afraid that they won't be viable by the time I can use them. Grrrr!
