Tech Tuesday: Comment Spam

Annoying as it is, I get a kick out of some of the blog spam that appears in my comments. For example, this one by "Anonymous" (aka James F. Collins), which I haven't published but have kept in my comment moderation cue, cracks me up.
Glad to materialize here. Good day or night everybody! Sure, you’ve heard about me, because my fame is running in front of me, my name is James F. Collins. Not long time ago I started my own blog, where I describe my virtual adventures. Probably, it will be interesting for you to read my notes.
I love the part about "Sure you've heard about me, my fame is running in front of me." Who writes this stuff? I think someone should give them a Roseanne-like sitcom on one of the networks.

Most of the spam comments are jibberish, often with links to pharmaceuticals or online gambling sites, and I implore you to keep on top of these comments and delete them as they roll in. Not just because if someone inadvertently or purposely clicks on one of those links in the comment, you can be sure that you'll be flooded with even more spam.

Also, spammers slip in keywords like certain pharmaceutical drugs, which can make more spam because when their bots are crawling the internet, they search for keywords like these and hone in on your blog.

Ways that you can prevent or reduce spam are comment moderation, where the blogger has to manually to accept or reject comments left 2 weeks after a post is published. This seems to significantly help on my blog. For some reason, I get the most comment spam on older posts.

One could also choose to reject any comment left anonymously (go into your "settings" tab under the "comments" link and change the settings under "who can comment?"). I personally don't do this, since I run giveaways and often entrants do so anonymously, leaving their email in the comment.

You could also enable word verification on your blog, making commenters type in one of those crazy words before posting. I dislike doing this, and I'm sure in general your readers do too. But desperate times call for desperate measures. I'd much rather moderate comments and either publish or reject them rather than make my readers type in one of those dreaded words (though I suppose this may help keep your brain sharp and ward off senility!).

Now that I've included keywords like online gambling and pharmaceuticals in this post, I'm sure it will be spammed. Have you been spammed lately?

I was getting spam on one of my blogs and was forced to use word verification. The spam has stopped since then.

I loath spam. I was getting a bunch on older posts. I put on the word verification...it stopped for a while. I get some now and then even with the word verification on. When I get them I go in and delete each one. Just plain annoying.

I don't get spam, but I have it so you can not comment unless you are signed into google. Sorry about that annoying and funny spam:O)

This spam is coming from someplace in Asia where English is a secondary language. Clearly they've got some idiomatic diabilities.

I get a couple a week, mostly on older posts. I do comment moderation so I just reject it all. Annoying.

I would say one out of every 10 comments I get is spam (so sad, but true). I use the same system--I moderate all comments. It is time consuming but better than making my readers decipher those wicked google words for verification. Would love a way to block those spammers for good.

I get a ton of that kind of spam. It's nice of them to give us a good laugh while reading through and deleting it, don't you think? lol

Thankfully since I put on the word verification, I've only been spammed maybe twice, but before the same person spammed me every single day on the same post.

It got very tired very fast!

I also mostly get spammed on older posts so I put the moderation on posts after a certain number of days and that cut out almost all of them. They do come in at least once a day but they're never funny ones though, they're mostly just symbols. Where's James F. Collins when I need a good laugh? :)

Okay, it must have been fate that earlier I asked why I didn't get funny spam comments and then this ones comes in today on my Delta Faucet giveaway:

Damn!! I can wash me "Balls" with that faucet.

I definitely got a good laugh out of that... and deleted it of course. I'm not sure why balls needed to be capitalized and in quotes, but that seemed to make it even a little funnier to me!

I get them too and some are just irritating but funny.

I delete all anon that is not included with an email ie. giveaway entry.

I also have comment moderation on all post after 25 days since the spam seems to happen on older posts.

I hate typing in the dreaded capthcaere too so I don't allow my readers to have to go through that.

Spam hasn't been overwhelming at alll, just annoying waste of time to delete/reject.

I have comment moderation on too so I can easily delete spam on older posts. I notice that some of the same spammers try to sneak in a comment on older posts. I always delete it but wondered if there is a way to block their IP address so it's one less thing I have to do.
