The first of the peas have finally come to our table.
I planted them a bit late, like early April, so it's taken a while to enjoy them on our plates. The purple pod peas and the pretty purple pea flowers on the vines are a bonus in the garden amongst all that green.
They've run out of climbing space, but in my mind the peas were really an experiment. I've never grown them before, and I can't recall my dad growing them in our garden either when I was little. I've definitely learned to make more space around them and to use taller runners, which I'll do next year.
This morning I sat and shelled the peas, enjoying the delicious feel of popping them out of the shells. Something about it reminds me of a zipper.
We should have enough for our dinner tonight to go along with the grilled salmon and brown rice that I'm mentally preparing.
I now understand why some people eat their peas one at a time--all that shelling is a lot of work! Here's to savoring the small things in life, one at a time.

They are gorgeous! Enjoy!
I don't know why I torture myself looking at your photos of your garden goodies.
I get so envious... =)
Wow. I've never seen purple peas before. Definitely will give those a go when I have my own little garden :)
Those are beautiful! i've never seen the purple peas, although we always grow purple beans. They are so beautiful vining up a bean tee-pee.
i always grow sugar snap peas instead of shelling peas. You can eat the pods and they are super sweet. They freeze well too, and can be used in stir fries and soups.
i may have to try planting purple peas in the fall, just because they are pretty. Are they heirloom?
Those look great mama!!!!
I loved shelling peas when I was little! I've never seen purple ones before - that's pretty cool!
I like those! What variety are they? ...and which seed company is that from. I would love to note it for next year. Peas are being added to my garden next year.
Purple peas? I've never seen such a thing! Do they taste different from green peas?
It looks like your garden is doing so well this year...that's awesome!
I can almost smell them!!! I used to love shelling peas...not all the time though. sometimes as a kid I'd rather play :)
Enjoy your hard work :)
I am getting a ton of peas from my CSA this year. I'm a CSA rookie so I'm shelling and freezing them for later while we work on eating all of the leafy green I can't free for later.
My dog loves it when I shell peas. He gobbles up the ones that get away from me!
