National Coming Out Day

I can't help but post about the topic of National Coming Out Day, which is today. After the recent suicide of the Rutgers student last month, and this horrific event that happened last weekend in New York, I am heartbroken.  As a mother, I feel like I've been given the blessing and curse of having ten times the compassion for others that I had pre-parenthood--I suppose it's just something that comes out with the placenta. :)

When I see an old person hobbling down the street, I imagine that is my child someday and I make sure to smile warmly at the person. When I see teenagers taunting another teen, I feel angry, imagining that it is my child being teased, so I will often step in.  When I read about lesbian and gay couples whose unions are unrecognized, it angers me, imagining that my son was not allowed to marry a person he loves.  Sara Plays House says it much better here.

I love this post about coming out by Eric at Enormously Awkward. It is beautifully written, sweet and poignant.

I wish I had some words of encouragement or advice on this National Coming Out Day.  I just don't understand why human beings need to be so judgmental about others. If we all worried more about our own character development and spent less time fretting about how other people should be living their lives, the world would truly be a better place.
