13 Words by Lemony Snicket and Maira Kalman {Giveaway}

One of the sweetest gifts presented to me upon leaving my full-time post at the art museum was a delightful book called Ooh La La! (Max in Love), illustrated by the amazing Maira Kalman.
I was familiar with Kalman's work via another book, Roarr! Calder's Circus, which we used at the museum to supplement gallery teaching about an Alexander Calder wire sculpture that we had on loan in our collection.
You may have seen Maira's most recent book, And the Pursuit of Happiness, which was picked as one of the year's best by New York magazine.
I'm eager to read it, being a drooling and obvious fan of hers.

Naturally, when contacted about the possibility of checking out her recent collaborative children's book with the equally-talented Lemony Snicket, I was happy to participate.  The book, titled 13 Words is, as expected, beautifully and illustrated in Kalman's quirky style.
The story is cute and a little kooky, but that suits our family just fine.  You can't really expect anything else from Lemony Snicket, right?   And I was immediately drawn to its title, since I have a little thing for the number 13, which is my birth date. It's always brought me luck.

I love that this book introduces kids to the usual words like "dog" and "cake", but also throws a few oddballs in there like "haberdashery," "mezzo-soprano" and "despondent".
Psst...I try to get my kicks wherever I can, regarding raising a child who might not be able to reliably poop in the potty but can tell you exactly what a haberdashery is.
We love this delightful little book, and are eager to add more of Maira Kalman's books to our collection.

WIN IT!
One super-lucky reader will win
A Copy of 13 Words, character buttons (pins),

  1. The principals of Uncertainty looks really good too, for an adult book :)

  2. What a fun giveaway! I'd love to add all of these to Charlie's book collection and until she can read them on her own, her cousins would enjoy them when they come to visit too. I think 13 Words would be the most fun to read first, but Roarr! sounds fun too :) I didn't realize Maira Kalman had books for adults too! I'll have to look for some at the library :)
