Because of the rising cost of food, I've been eager to seek out alternatives to our traditional grocery store, and recently I discovered Bottom Dollar Food, which just opened near my parents' house in the Philly suburbs.
While I tend to shy away from so-called discount grocery stores, mainly because I cook meals for my family using simple ingredients like fresh produce, whole grains, and organic foods, and often bargain stores don't carry such items, I was impressed that Bottom Dollar Food carried a lot of things that I'd normally buy.
Lots of spices, seasonings and herbs, as well as organic green tea, which I bought for iced tea.
Even Dunkin' Donuts coffee, at a great price for the Philly 'burbs area.
The store itself was impressively clean, organized and stocked. Staff was clearly visible, and I think there was at least 1 employee in every other aisle. Granted, it was morning and they were stocking things, but if I had needed assistance I wouldn't have had to go far.
Bottom Dollar Food has a mix of name brand items as well as some store-brand products. I was surprised to find bags of Chex Mix for under 2 bucks.
The pretzel and snack aisle was quite stocked, with many varieties of pretzels. Soren picked out his favorite (he's a pretzel fiend).
Bottom Dollar Food also carries a variety of items for babies, including food, diapers, wipes and meals. It's been a while since I've bought these things, but prices seemed quite reasonable compared to other grocery stores.
I even scored grated Parmesan for under $2. Cool!
What I liked about shopping at Bottom Dollar Food was that it is so comparable to a "regular" grocery store; there's a decent produce section, a frozen food aisle, and refrigerated sections. And of course, you're saving money on it all, so you really can find most everything you're shopping for in one place. I can say that with some products, Bottom Dollar Food was limited in the variety of brands, but in general, I could do much of my shopping just at this store.
In the end, my mom and I got quite a good haul for $50, including cat litter, fresh blueberries (for under $2 a package), pretzels, tortilla chips, tea, and even Cheerios for $2.
Plus lots more, which would be a little redundant to name it all.
You can find Bottom Dollar Food along the East Coast, specifically Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. It's definitely worth checking out. You can also "like" the Bottom Dollar Facebook page to keep up with weekly deals.

Disclosure: I received a $50 gift certificate to Bottom Dollar Food for review purposes.
As a west coaster, I'm pretty psyched that I could donate this to my struggling brother-in-law, who works with autistic children in Rockville, MD. Bottom Dollar's store locator is great and told me that there was a store within 10 miles of his house.

Hi, I also shop at a Bottom Dollar in the Philadelphia suburbs. When I first visited I made sure to have exact prices from the surrounding supermarkets. What impressed me is that Bottom Dollar has better prices on many items (cottage cheese, yogurt, frozen dinners and eggs, to name a few). I tried their brand of facial tissues and they are as soft as name brand tissues. Pity the store is not the size of a regular supermarket because they could expand their products, and offering their prices they would do quite a good business and have me for all my shopping. As it is, I do a third of my shopping there.
