Outdoor Fun with Homemade Sidewalk Paint

We tend to spend our afternoons outside, despite the muggy conditions this week, and I'm always looking for cheap and easy ways to entertain my son with minimal effort on my part.  He loves messes and painting, so I thought we'd take our art making outside yesterday with homemade sidewalk paint.
All it takes are 3 ingredients: equal parts corn starch and water, and a few drops of food coloring.
Even S helped in preparing the concoction.
I used about 1/3 cup each of water and cornstarch, though you could make the paint thicker with adding more cornstarch.  Then just add as little or as much food coloring as you'd like.
Then hit your nearest sidewalk and let the kids be creative.
I couldn't help but join in too, painting images for Soren by request--his name, trucks, a boat
 and even a bird.
Eventually, the paints got dumped (the mess part), but no problem.  I was surprised that they rinsed away easily, without staining the walkway.  The "erasing" was half the fun for Soren, getting out the hose and watering can and making the images disappear.  I imagine we'll be doing more painting all summer long, as long as I keep the corn starch in supply!

  3. Just when you think he might be getting tired of painting, add some baking soda into the paint mix and let him paint, then give him a spray bottle with vinegar in it and let him shoot his work.

It sounds like Soren and my son have similar interests in creativity and demolition and Salem loved the fizzing art, maybe it's up Soren's alley, too.

  4. Fun! Love the idea of baking soda, too- although I can see Roo and Jasper squirting it in each other's eyes.

Man, you have a lot to look forward to with the sibling coming…
