So when the Adventures of Meno books showed up at my door, I was psyched.
These books by husband and wife team Tony and Angela DiTerlizzi, are wonderfully illustrated and tell the story of Meno the Space Elf from planet Claire who lives in a happy blue sky in a house of cloud.
Meno's best friend is Yamagoo, a fish of jelly (there are lots of yoda-esque phrases that pepper the books) and he has another friend named Wishi, who makes an appearance in the second book "Wet Friend".
From the press:Publisher’s Weekly calls the book “A preschool epic so polished that it looks untouched by human hands” and PixieStix.com describes as “the …clean layout, punchy full bleed art, and bouncy text add up to a high-style package that will be equally at home on a children’s bookshelf or a pop-culture lover’s coffee table”
Book One, titled "Big Fun" is a simple and silly story that ends on a light note and smelly--the "big fun" (a fart). Meno even has a theme song printed on the last page with the lyrics sung to "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star."
Book Two, Wet Friend, is better than the first in my opinion.
You get to meet Wishi, who grants Meno and Yamagoo a wish. It seems a little more cohesive than the first book and the slightly random fart ending. I do love the colors and illustrations in these books, and I'm sure the farting reference will appeal to SoJo as he becomes old enough to appreciate Meno and friends.Would you like to tag along with Meno and his adventures? Well, the publisher is offering...
Both books signed by the authors
and a custom-made Meno or Wishi Blanket of your choice!

I think I'm enamored with Yamagoo simply because he's prone to flatulence. We need more books with fart humor in them :)

Those are some seriously cute characters. The cartoons in the book look nice also. Little joke there. Seriously, I love how everything has that warm and cozy retro feel to it. It reminds me of that little boy in the Warner Brothers cartoons that used to daydream in class.

I love the characters! They are all adorable. Especially Wishi and Yamagoo.
How cute. I like the illustrations. To me, it is just the right mix of retro looking commercials meets anime. I like that the authors' inspiration is from things that I can relate to when I was a kid - like Golden Books.

The pages are full of colorful and simple, clear illustration, and the language is simple and (while ungrammatical...) not overdone. I love Meno, Yamagoo, and the gang! How quirky and bizarre, and what a great jumping off point for big imaginations.

The authors daughter was an inspiration for this :)
What I found interesting about the authors is that they gathered their inspiration not only from old vintage items, which is visible in their illustration, but they they pulled it from their little girl as well. What a special gift their daughter will have in her life....published books written with her in mind!
