There's more crafty yumminess from Lark Crafts this month--two new books that appeal to my interest in needle work and fiber arts.
First up is Doodle Stitching: Embroidery and Beyond, Crewel, Cross Stitch Sashiko and More by Aimee Ray.
This book is wonderful, filled with modern and functional items for you to create with stitching and embroidery. One of my favorite art forms is free-hand embroidery and Doodle Stitching has many to inspire late-night stitching. From family trees
to redwork Hansel and Gretel storybook panels
to an adorable felt babushka doll, there's something for all tastes in this delightful book.
Now if I could just find some time to work on one of these when my eyes aren't drooping to sleep. There are detailed instructions and patterns in the book that guide you through the process of making these items, along with techniques for creating the stitches. You just need the materials and you're set. (Stick around for a giveaway at the end of this post for some embroidery floss and the book).
Another fun release from Lark Crafts is Adventures in PomPom Land: 25 Cute Projects Made from Handmade PomPoms by Myko Diann Bocek, (just under 5 bucks at Barnes and Noble!!) a book that requires very little in way of sewing skills but yields some very cute results.
Using the detailed instructions for making fat, fluffy pompoms, you can make all kinds of adorable creatures in this book.
I think Adventures in PomPom Land will be a great yarn stash buster for me; it's perfect for using up those balls of wool yarn that are just too small for knitting something.
How sugary-sweet adorable are those creations, both made from wool yarn pompoms?
With Easter coming up in less than two weeks, there are sweet little spring animals that would nicely accompany any chocolate bunnies and jelly beans in an Easter basket. No time-consuming knitting involved!
The only drawback to the projects in this book for me is that I wouldn't trust giving a finished product to either of my boys. They're prone to pulling things apart, and with pompoms, those strands of yarn are just begging to be tugged at. Any creations I'd make would be used for display rather than play. But it might be a fun project to work on with my 5 year old, since pompom making isn't difficult. I think he'd like wrapping yarn around cardboard to make a pompom (not sure I'd let him use my needle felting needles just yet).
Adventures in PomPom Land is an imaginative and whimsical addition to our home library, and I hope it inspires creative fun for me and my son.
The Lark Needle Arts Facebook page is a great place to keep up with the newest books from their fiber arts line, and there are tons of other crafty offerings on the Lark Crafts main Facebook page.
I'm excited to announce that one lucky reader will win an embroidery prize package from Lark Crafts--a copy of Doodle Stitching and an assortment of embroidery floss to get you started on a project!
